What We Do At 1207 (Maldon) Squadron

Being a member of the Maldon Air Cadets allows you to take place in the large number of activities that are available to members of the Air Training Corps.

Flying and Gliding:

Flying is a popular activity and it is the intention of the organisation to fly every cadet at least once a year. This can be either at an Air Experience Flight (AEF) or on a Summer Camp at an RAF station. The location of our local AEF is RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire and provide us with weekend flying slots but when on camp it could be at any of the 12 AEFs around the country. AEFs use the Tutor aircraft (Seen in the above photo). There are also opportunities for cadets to fly in active RAF aircraft.

Gliding is another popular activity and after an initial flight can lead to weekend or a full week course which train cadets how to fly gliders, with some ultimately going solo. Our local Gliding Squadron is 614 VGS (Volunteer Gliding Squadron) based at Wethersfield Airfield near Braintree. 614 fly the Air Cadet winch launched Viking glider. The first qualification a cadet can hope to achieve is the Gliding Induction Course (GIC).This requires about 3 launches to complete. After this you can apply to go on a Gliding Scholarship which will run either on weekends or over a week in the school holidays. These Scholarships teach cadets more about flying and hopefully will see them fly solo by the end of the course, and achieve their silver or blue wings. Many cadets fly an aircraft solo before they are even allowed to drive a car.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme:

The Air Cadets are the biggest participants in the Duke Of Edinburgh Scheme, and Maldon is a big contributor. After initial training, every cadet will be enrolled in the scheme and will gain their Bronze award as a minimum standard. Currently we have cadets working towards every level of the scheme. Pictured above is this years Gold Expedition Team.

Sports:

We provide a wide range of sports for cadet participation. All of the sports training also forms part of the evidence for the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. At our squadron not only do we participate in general fitness training and team building activities, we also compete against other squadrons in a range of sporting activities such as swimming, athletics, football, rugby, netball, hockey and many others.

Camps:

Each year the squadron gets the opportunity to go on an annual camp also known as a 'Blue Camp' at an RAF station in the summer holidays. Blue camps provide cadets with the opportunity to experience 'The RAF way of life'. The cadets get a chance to see some of the many roles performed on an RAF base and get the opportunity to complete work experience amongst many other activities in an action packed week.

As well as 'Blue camps' Essex Wing holds a 'Green Camp' in the October half term each year in Wales . Activities include clay pidgeon shooting, canoeing, climbing, walking, obstacle course, leadership and initiative exercises, go karting or quad biking amongst many other activities. Both camps are a great opportunity for meeting new cadets from other squadrons in Essex Wing.

Drill And Uniform:

With the Air Cadets widely held as the public image of the RAF in Essex we ensure that we maintain high standards at all times. This is from the uniform we wear to how we are seen in the public eye. This covers the areas of drill, dress and discipline which are fundamental to our organisation. As a probationer you are taught how to iron your uniform, taught basic drill and how to act appropriately in different circumstances. This is maintained through out your cadet career as we carry out regular inspections and drill practice. We award annual prizes to the flight with the best drill and uniform standards.

In and Amongst The Community:

1207 (Maldon) Squadron often lends a hand with events happening in the local area. We help with car parking at the Blackwater Country Show. We collect for the RAFA Wings Appeal and are present for the Maldon Rememberence Parade in honour of those who gave their lives in order for us to live in freedom today. We are always ready to provide help to any event or task within the community.
